Magtein Improves Cognitive Performance Equivalent to 7.5 Years of Brain Aging: Study

The magnesium ingredient also showed effects on recovery measures, such as reduced resting heart rate, increased heart rate variability, and improvements in sleep-related impairment.

In a clinical study published in Frontiers in Nutrition, Magtein, a branded magnesium L-threonate ingredient, was shown to significantly improve measures of cognition, cardiovascular health, stress, and sleep recovery. The six-week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial enrolled 100 adults aged 18-45 who received 2 grams of Magtein or placebo daily. Results showed that compared to placebo, Magtein supplementation:

  • Significantly improved cognitive test performance as measured by the NIH Total Cognition Composite (p=0.043);
  • Reduced average “cognitive age” measures by the equivalent of 7.5 years (as measured by the NIH Toolbox Total Cognition Composite Change Sensitive Score (CSS);
  • Improved reaction time (p=0.031)
  • Enhanced cardiovascular health markers such as resting heart rate (p=0.03) and heart rate variability (p=0.036);
  • And improved measures of sleep-related impairment (p=0.043) with significant benefits for those experiencing more severe sleep problems.

Magtein is unique in that, unlike other forms of magnesium, it can cross the blood-brain barrier. It was developed after Liu conducted research at MIT on the brain bioavailability of nutrients.

The study also confirmed Magtein’s safety profile, with no reports of significant adverse reactions and good tolerability throughout the trial period.
